E’ molto felice, si è innamorata della città, le piace il suo appartamento e adora la sua vicina; ha perfino un ragazzo, Mitchell bello, ricco e affascinante e poco più grande di lei. Tutto sembra andare alla perfezione finchè un giorno, Esme si sveglia con una strana sensazione in petto, certa di aver dimenticato qualcosa di fondamentale anche se non riesce a ricordarsi cosa. Ed è all’improvviso che arriva la realizzazione. Esme è incinta. Prima di riuscire a dirlo al suo ragazzo… lui la molla ed è da quel momento in poi che la vera storia inizia! Dopo aver deciso di tenere il bambino, Esme deve iniziare ad organizzare la sua nuova vita e per prima cosa ha bisogno di uno stipendio extra oltre a quello che percepisce per il dottorato, per cui accetta di lavorare part-time alla sua libreria preferita, The Owl. I suoi colleghi, vivaci e folcloristici diventano la sua seconda famiglia accompagnandola nel suo viaggio verso la maternità. Quando ho cominciato questo libro avevo parecchie aspettative. Mi piaceva l’idea dell’ambientazione in questa libreria molto indie e le descrizioni dei tanti coffee shop, ristoranti e musei frequentati dalla protagonista. Un'altra nota importantissima è che la Meyler scrive molto bene, la narrativa è ben costruita e i personaggi sono certamente interessanti. Se amate i vecchi libri, la storia dell’arte e le citazioni questo libro fa decisamente per voi. Personalmente ho avuto serie difficoltà a trovare una connessione emotiva con Esme, priva di espressività nonostante i mille interessi. Ma credo dipendi soprattutto da me. Da non perdere. Vi dico la verità. Quando ho chiesto di leggere Losing Hope non avevo delle grandi aspettative e vi spiego perchè. Dopo Slammed e Point of Retreat leggere This Girl, l’ho trovato un po’… inutile. So già che molti vorrebbero tirarmi i pomodori ma è ciò che ho provato. Ma questa volta leggendo Losing Hope mi è sembrato di leggere un libro totalmente diverso da Hopeless. L’Holder POV è un’altra cosa ancora. E’ vero gli eventi sono gli stessi ma se in Hopeless mi sono innamorata di Holder e di Sky in L.H. mi sono proprio innamorata di Dean. La sua storia parte da poco prima della morte di Les e da quel momento in poi è un crescendo di turbamenti, commozione e di vita, accompagnati da una sorta di diario con cui Holder scrive a sua sorella. Una storia toccante di amore, di amicizia e di VITA. Da non perdere, grazie a NetGalley per avermi dato l’opportunità di leggere questa perla. Lo porterò sempre nel mio cuore.
